Mark Greenfield
I am seeking a position on the Board of the Sauvie Island Community Association because I want to contribute to the community that I call home and because I care about the health, vitality and well-being of the people, agricultural enterprises and natural resource amenities on the island. I am excited to be part of a growing organization that cares about and is truly dedicated to the best interests of the island, its residents and businesses, and I feel that as a Board member I can contribute much to that cause.
As a land use lawyer and consultant with over 32 years’ experience, I have spent many hundreds of hours representing commercial farmers and ranchers seeking to improve their farming operations or protect them from the encroachment of nonfarm uses. While today I mostly work for the State of Oregon and other governmental entities, I continue to address agricultural and natural resource related issues on a routine basis. Overall, I believe my legal training and experience provide me with unique skills that can substantially benefit the Association and its membership.
My former non-profit Board experience includes about 7 years on the board of the Portland Audubon Society, including several years first as vice president and then as president. On a personal level, I am married to long-time (34-year) Sauvie Island resident Jane Hartline, with whom I have resided for more than four years. Most of our property is dedicated to our sheep operation, but we also are restoring several acres to native habitat.
Heather Hanselman
I am what is affectionately referred to as “an Island Original.” I was born and raised on Sauvies Island. I have enjoyed being part of a small school and tight knit community. It is why I continue to call the island home. I spent fifteen summers working at Sauvies Island Farms Market (currently Kruger’s Farm Market) under Denny and Nancy Grande, while going to Parkrose High School and Portland State University. Since 1992, I have own and operated Blue Heron Herbary. I participate in 3 farmers markets during the growing season to promote the business. During the off season, I am employed at The Mountain Shop in Portland, Oregon. At the Mountain Shop I am employed as a master boot fitter. I enjoy skiing, mountain biking and am a master gardener. I am also a member of the Oregon Lavender Association since 2007 and served on the marketing/advertising committee the past two years. I would like to serve the island which has served me so well.
Diane Kunkel
Dave and I own/operate Columbia Farms. Dave started working on the Island in the ’70s. We moved to the Island in 1986. We farm over 2000 acres on Sauvie Island; mostly grass seed, wheat, clover, some corn for silage and berries. I also run our farm stand on Gillihan Road. Besides farming, we have raised two daughters on Sauvie Island. I am blessed to live and work on Sauvie Island.
Note: Diane has also served on the Scappoose School Board

I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the Board of the Sauvie Island Community Association, should I be elected. Wherever I have lived, the place I call home goes beyond the boundaries of my property. What happens in my community is important to me, and I want to play a part in helping it to thrive.
Six years ago Sauvie Island became my community, my home. I moved here from the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood of Portland in 2003. With each passing year I’ve had the pleasure of meeting more and more of the island’s residents. Now I’d like to play an active role as the Sauvie Island Community Association evolves into a strong advocate for the welfare of this place and the people who live here.
I bring to the Sauvie Island Community Association a depth of experience and knowledge. A life-long interest in environmental and urban planning and design has led to extensive community involvement in that area and in related transportation issues, including an eight-year appointment as a City of Portland Design Commissioner and ten years on the board of the Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood Association, including six years as chair of the Land Use and Transportation Committee. I have also been an officer and/or board member of numerous non-profit professional, civic, and cultural organizations, including the Lloyd District Transportation Management Association, Portland Culinary Alliance, Portland Art Museum Contemporary Art Council, and, in Eugene, Designers’ Forum, Oregon Repertory Theatre, Executive Business Women, and Maude Kerns Art Center.
As both designer and author I have pursued multiple career paths, with graphic design, exhibit design, and three-dimensional design a primary professional focus. I now operate my business, Wisner Creative, out of a studio in my home here on the island.
