Charter School Information Meeting
Posted on April 17th, 2010Thursday, 22 April @ 7:00 pm. Charter School Information Meeting (this is a second of two) at Sauvie Island school cafeteria. The Oregon Department of Education has set 7 May as the Grant application due date. We wish to explore viability of converting SIS to a Charter school by gathering community input prior to submitting the grant application. Creating a Charter school is a community effort and your support and input on the direction and focus of our school is necessary to make this successful and obtain an accurate assessment. Community members are provided this opportunity to see what our working teams have come up with and provide input; it is not a Q and A. More details to follow. Hillary Brubaker.
Grange Notes
Posted on April 16th, 2010Good Deeds Spaghetti and Bingo. What a success, in fun and fund raising. Thank you to all of you who came and supported our efforts to earn money for our annual giving program. We earned $1650 for the evening, which is over twice what we generated last year. The evening started with an excellent spaghetti sauce crafted by several wonderful cooks. The raffle was pretty entertaining especially when Lynn Trupp kept winning. John Huffman won the $300 grand prize gift card to Skamania Lodge. The bingo pots were impressive with the final black out over $80. Everyone had a great time and it was standing room only. Thank you so much for making it such a great event. We would like to thank the individuals and businesses who donated items for the raffle and they are:

As you can see from the list above, we are blessed with a very generous community. Thank you so much for your contributions and participation. This year’s efforts were led by our Grange Worker’s Activities President Katholeen McGinty. Katholeen had a host of helpers to put on this event and knows the success of our event is a result of the volunteers. Thanks to all of those who worked so hard to make it look so easy.
ADOPT A ROAD – A couple of month’s ago, the Grange applied to the Adopt a Road program in order to mow the triangle at the turnaround. Unfortunately, the Adopt a Road program doesn’t address median strips. We can pick up litter but we cannot mow until they develop a program that would allow us to do so. In the meantime, the County has committed to keeping the triangle mowed. In fact, after our meeting Monday night which the Road Operations Manager attended, the triangle was mowed and cleaned up. We were very pleased to see that they responded so quickly and it looks great!
SCHOLARSHIPS – The winners of our annual scholarship program will be announced at our Ice Cream Social Open House on May 10 at 7:30 pm where they are invited to accept their certificates and meet the community. The Edna Graf Memorial Scholarship started in 1983 and this year’s distribution will total $3000. In addition, we are pleased to announce the Olive Erikson Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000. Ms Erikson was an island resident who wanted to help our students with continuing their education. We are very pleased to be able to offer more to our students as a result of Ms Erikson’s donation. Please join us for a wonderful evening of celebration.
75th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION – The Sauvie Island Grange is celebrating our 75th anniversary at our open house potluck in September. We are starting to develop the program that we hope will include some storytelling from islanders. Mark your calendars for Monday, September 13th, 6:00 pm.
GRANGE HALL = COMMUNITY CENTER – The Grange offers our hall to non-profit groups on the island free of charge as part of our community service program. In 2009, community groups held over seventy meetings at the hall. Groups that regularly use the hall are the Grange, Grange Workers Activities (GWA), Safety Action Team, Sauvie Island Community Association and the Sauvie Island Drainage District. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District also hold meetings at the Grange. Grange members and islanders can rent the hall at a discount for non-alcoholic events. If you are looking for a quiet meeting place, this is ideal because we don’t have good cell phone coverage inside the building. Call 503-621-3620 for rental information.

Posted on April 15th, 2010Final Revision (Apr 9, ’10) of SICA Proposed Bylaws
Posted on April 9th, 2010The word “businesses” has been re-inserted into Section 2 of the Proposed Bylaws being voted on at our Annual meeting, Thursday, April 15, 2010. It was called to our attention that in the version of the proposed Bylaws posted on the website March 26, 2010, the word businesses was inadvertently removed from Article 1, Section 2: Goals and Objectives of the Association when the non-resident business owner category was removed. The version you will be voting on April 15 at the Annual meeting has the word businesses reinserted in A-F in Section 2, as shown below. ALL business owners who are also residents of the island would be eligible to become Active Members of the Association. The Sauvie Island Community Association wants to document support of those businesses in the proposed Bylaws. Non-resident owners of island property would also be eligible, as described in the full copy of the Bylaws posted on the website. An updated version of the complete proposed Bylaws is available here.
