Scott Students Need Your Help

Posted on February 24th, 2010

Scott Grade School in North Portland needs volunteers in the month of March for several short sessions to read the OAKS State Math test to Scott students grades 3 through 8.  All you have to do is read aloud the written words you see on a computer screen (this is done as children are being tested on their math ability not their reading ability). Please help by contacting Terri Schumacher via email tschumac@pps.k12.or.us or calling her at 503.916.6369 ext 72341, to sign up for one or more sessions.  If you can’t help, please pass this along to friends and/or family members.  Having the State Math Test read to our students really does help and you could be the one to make a difference in a child’s life. Click here to see a schedule of times to sign up.

A Volunteer Idea – Fences For Fido

Posted on January 27th, 2010
Jennifer Adams of Sauvie Island Road submits:
I volunteer forFENCES FOR FIDO -  Their mission is to build a fence so that a dog may live unchained.  We are changing lives…one fence, one family, one dog at a time.We see first-hand the tangible difference a fence makes for a dog. For the family, it gives permission to change their relationship with their loyal friend; no longer feeling the guilt that comes from seeing their dog chained day after day, knowing they should do more.  Here are the facts:
• Dogs un-chained to date: 27
• Dogs currently on FFF wait list: 23 (and growing)
• Insulated shelters delivered: 48 (incl. those who have not yet received fence)
• Number of volunteers: over 400 (and growing)
• Paid staff: 0
• Initial intent to build one fence per month, now building: 6 fences per month
If you still doubt what your hands can do, watch this short slide show about Cooper. Be warned … he has been known to bring happy tears to eyes.We need your help to free 20 dogs from chains by the end of March. Twenty dogs are currently on the FFF wait list eager for their chance to run free. As you know, every penny goes directly to those special little canine souls.  This is such a worthwhile organization so, if you can’t volunteer your time perhaps you’d like to support our fundraiser.  Feel free to email me, Jennifer at boxthegnat@gmail.com.

Waste Management and Recycling

Posted on January 22nd, 2010

Waste Management, Inc. has taken over Gruetter Disposal Service’s island route as of 1 January 2010. On 28 Jan 2010, customers of Waste Management received 64-gallon recycling containers with this announcement.

Islanders, not customers of Waste Management have two other recycling options on the island:

  • The SI Fire Departments runs a recycling container located at the Douglas barn on Sauvie Island Road which accepts paper (newspaper, scrap paper, magazines, newspapers or cardboard).
  • Several smaller recycling bins are located behind the Sauvie Island school.  Recyclers can bring any paper product, tin, aluminum, hard plastic and metals – NO GLASS.

Any recycling material can also be taken to

  • Metro transfer center, which takes everything, including hazardous wastes.  To get there, I-30, left on Kittridge and left again as soon as you cross over the overpass.
  • N.W. Recycling Center, 1520 NW Quimby ( Tue through Sat. 8 - 5);  a $3 donation requested.
Before you toss a glass bottle into the trash, consider this: The energy savings from recycling one bottle will power a computer for 25 minutes. Be part of the solution – recycle!
