Those present discussed today’s resignation of Sheriff Skipper. He was highly regarded in the community as Sheriff Skipper exhibited extensive interest in policing the island and related issues…

The Car Counter Results for the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area are January-August this year tallied 746,159. July alone was 196,559. The count does not include non Wildlife Areas such as the farm markets or the Multnomah Chanel boat ramp.

Representatives of the Multnomah County Sheriff‘s Office discussed methods to address traffic issues on island roads. A vehicle speed indicator will be located along island roads in the near future. The unit will move to various locations in an effort to make drivers more aware of their speed. County survey reviews did not find criteria for speed reductions at various locations along Northwest Sauvie Island Road.

Other areas of the island’s roads will also come under review as residents who attended the meeting continue to press for action by county roads regulatory section.

County agencies are planning priorities for law enforcement should the H1N1 virus result in widespread absence in various departments such as the Sheriff’s office.

Island traffic will increase in September and October as harvest functions, hunting and fishing activity overlap. The additional left turn lane off the bridge onto highway 30 towards Portland may ease traffic concerns of previous years. The signal control unit for the new bridge is conveniently located for officers working traffic flow during weekend volumes.

The County is responsible for regulation of the new parking lot/bus stop at the foot of the bridge.

Citizens witnessing Wildlife Violations may report them to the State Police at 1.800.452.7888.

Deputy Larry Weaver will legally retire from his position of deputy of the Columbia County Sheriff’s office. He will remain in a limited basis with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. His retirement party is at Columbia Farms on Saturday October 3, 2009.
