Hiking

Wapato State Greenway (18846 NW Sauvie Island Rd) located 2.8 miles from the Sauvie Island bridge, is an easy 2.3 mile loop around Virginia Lake. Great for bird watching, it is open year-round. Dogs must be kept on leash. State fine for walking dogs off leash is $142/dog.

“Wapato is part of the Willamette River Greenway, a network of lands set aside to protect our watershed.
A new comprehensive plan retains this original concept by identifying wetland restoration opportunities, but also helps identify and serve the current and future needs of the public who greatly value the visitor experience that Wapato affords. This document focuses on understanding what exists at Wapato, what is needed, and what could be. It describes park management values, goals, strategies, and actions that will conserve the landscape and enable careful access to it.” Tim Wood, Director of the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department

The Sauvie Island Wildlife Area is a perfect place to explore the local landscape on foot. Picnicking and other day-use activities are permitted as long as visitors obey the regulations in place to protect wildlife. Please respect the area by carrying all your garbage out. There is no drinking water available; only primitive restrooms. Also, there is no overnight camping. All wildlife areas are open to the public from April 16 through September 30 each year.

Oak Island Nature Trail is a 2.5-mile loop trail around the Oak Island peninsula. The trail is actually a mowed path through the tall grass. You can stick to the path or wander cross-country through the tall grass fields to a quiet spot on Sturgeon Lake or Steelman Lake. Take care to orient yourself to the main path.

  • How to get there: To get to Sturgeon Lake or the Nature Hike, head North on Sauvie Island Road and at the “Y” in the road keep right onto Reeder Road. Follow Reeder Road about 1.5 miles and you will see a sign for Oak Island Road (be careful as you cross the oncoming traffic here). The road will eventually become gravel; follow it to the junction at Webster Pond. To access the Hike continue straight at the junction to the end of the road. To access Sturgeon Lake, take a right at the junction and go around Webster Pond – the road will dead end at the launch for Sturgeon Lake.
  • For additional information go to Oak Island webpage.
