Grey Horton
I am seeking a position on the SICA board because I believe I can help maintain the health of our community and country lifestyle in the short and long term. We face external and internal pressures regarding land use, road use, wildlife habitat, tourism, community connectedness, and economic vitality. I believe that as a board member I can help guide us to a more harmonious and prosperous future.
I have an extensive education in horticulture and I have been farming vegetables on the Island for the last four years. My family has been on the Island since the early 50’s (the Givens and Margret Swanson). As a Grange member, farmer, resident, and former city dweller, I think my experiences give me an understanding of many points of view. I have also served on several nonprofit and club boards. I look forward to the challenges of maintaining our rural life and character while reinforcing our community ties.
Katholeen McGinty
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. When not in school, I spent most of my youth on Sauvies Island while my father was farming the land and building the home I now live in. For 25 years I spent my time moving around the United States and Europe with my husband, who was in the Air Force. I attended New Mexico State Universtiy and various colleges wherever I was living until I finally returned to Portland, got my Masters degree at Portland State University, and taught students from pre-k to 21 years. I taught for 21 years in Portland public schools, mostly in special education and later in North Portland until retirement in 1998. I was then a substitute for the district in various schools until 2005.
I am involved with the Sauvie Island Grange, a past Grange Workers Association president, and now on the Grange board. I’m also a secretary for Multnomah County Pomona (Grange), and involved with St. Birgitta’s Church, Holy Rosary Church, Sauvie Island Safety Action Team, and the communications committee for SICA. My interests are watching junior hockey (Winterhawks), bike riding, kayaking, and reading, when I’m not mowing the lawn or doing some other yard work.
Mark Greenfield
I am seeking re-election to the Board of the Sauvie Island Community Association because I want to contribute to the community that I call home and because I care about the health, vitality and well-being of the people, agricultural enterprises and natural resource amenities on the island. I am excited to be part of a growing organization that cares about and is truly dedicated to the best interests of the island, its residents and businesses, and I feel that as a Board member I can contribute much to that cause.
As a land use lawyer and consultant with over 32 years’ experience, I have spent many hundreds of hours representing commercial farmers and ranchers seeking to improve their farming operations or protect them from the encroachment of nonfarm uses. While today I mostly work for the State of Oregon and other governmental entities, I continue to address agricultural and natural resource related issues on a routine basis. Overall, I believe my legal training and experience provide me with unique skills that can substantially benefit the Association and its membership.
My former non-profit Board experience includes about 7 years on the board of the Portland Audubon Society, including several years first as vice president and then as president. On a personal level, I am married to long-time (38-year) Sauvie Island resident Jane Hartline, with whom I have resided for more than four years. Most of our property is dedicated to our sheep operation, but we also are restoring several acres to native habitat.
Linda Klarquist
I have served as the board secretary for the past two years and look forward to continuing as a board member. I am a retired school counselor. I am married to Skip Klarquist, the mother of three boys, and grandmother to one. I’ve lived on the island for 10 years and love the sense of community we have here! My interests include gardening, reading,traveling and enjoying family and friends!
